Coupled with our extensive development experience, we have worked hard at providing ourselves with some of the most accurate engine testing facilities in the world, a vital part of measuring fine performance differences on engines which are already at the top of their capabilities. Air inlet temperature, pressure and humidity are controlled by a combustion air handling system ensuring that test results are accurate and repeatable.
Our dynamometer facilities can be hired independently so that clients can test their own engines. Ilmor can provide design support to carry out the initial engine installation work and will provide as much or little engineering support as is required to support the testing, to ensure the client achieves their desired objectives. Our development engineers will be able to compile and supervise performance or durability test programmes for your engine and make recommendations based on your requirements.
Our facility consists of six water brake dynos and one transient dyno, each with AVL or REO control systems. The dyno cells are also equipped with a Horiba MEXA 7170D Emissions Measurement system for feed gas and tailpipe gas analysis. There are also motored test rigs, which allow off engine testing of engine subsystems, such as the valvetrain or oil and water systems. These rigs generally facilitate more in depth measurements than are possible in a fired engine and also are more economical to run.
The various racing and production based programmes in which Ilmor has participated over the years have given our development engineers first-hand experience of running and optimising engines using many different types of fuel including Gasoline, Diesel, Aviation fuel, Methanol and Ethanol (E10, E85, E98). Our 42000 litre above-ground fuel tank and five 9000 litre underground fuel tanks can be loaded with any type of fuel to allow virtually any engine to be tested. It is also possible to run directly from the barrel, to allow back-to-back fuel tests to be carried out for instance.
