Will Power Remains Points Leader with Top-Five Finish on Detroit’s Raceway at Belle Isle Park
DETROIT – (JUNE 3, 2012) - Will Power’s fourth-place finish paced four Chevrolet IndyCar V-6 drivers in the top 10 in the Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Indy Grand Prix on Sunday. Power, No. 12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet, started second, and stayed near the front for the entire race, which was shortened from 90 to 60 laps following nearly a two-hour delay to repair the track.
“We’re disappointed that the race couldn’t go the full 90 laps,” said Chris Berube, Chevrolet Racing IndyCar Program Manager. “Because we felt that we very well could’ve been in contention for our fifth win in six races this season. But, sometimes things happen that are out of your control, and you have to try to do the very best that you can regardless of the situation. We will regroup and focus on the race next weekend in Texas.”
Oriol Servia, No. 22 Panther/Dreyer & Reinbold Racing Chevrolet, ended up in fifth place to score his second top-five finish in two races since joining Team Chevy. He finished fourth in the Indianapolis 500 last week.
Tony Kanaan, No. 11 GEICO/MOUSER Electronics KV Racing Technology Chevrolet (sixth) and Ryan Hunter-Reay, No. 28 Team DHL/Sun Drop Citrus Soda Andretti Autosport Chevrolet, (seventh) also finished in the top 10 for Chevrolet.
Marco Andretti, No. 26 Team RC Cola Andretti Autosport Chevrolet, (11th) just missed his first top-10 of the season, followed by Ed Carpenter, No. 20 Fuzzy’s Ultra Premium Vodka Ed Carpenter Racing Chevrolet, whose 12th-place finish was a season best.
Finishing one lap off the pace were JR Hildebrand, No. 4 National Guard Panther Racing Chevrolet, (14th), Ryan Briscoe, No. 2 Hitachi Team Penske Chevrolet, (16th) and Helio Castroneves, No. 3 Shell V-Power/Pennzoil Ultra Team Penske Chevrolet, (17th), who both spun on the first lap of the re-start following the red flag. EJ Viso was 18th, one lap down.
James Hinchcliffe, No. 27 Team GoDaddy.com Andretti Autosport Chevrolet, Sebastien Bourdais, No. 7 TrueCar Dragon Racing Chevrolet and Rubens Barrichello, No. 8 BMC/Embrase KV Racing Technology Chevrolet, were early retirees from the race. Hinchcliffe made contact with the tires after encountering track debris. Bourdais and Barrichello had mechanical issues. The trio finished 21st, 24th and 25th respectively.
