25 years of Ilmor 05 February 09
2009 marks the first quarter-century of Ilmor Engineering Ltd, and we are in good company, sharing this landmark anniversary with prestigious companies such as Apple Mac and Virgin Atlantic. In this time Ilmor has achieved unprecedented racing success, counting 14 Indy 500 wins, over 200 Indycar wins, 44 Formula 1 wins and 2 Formula 1 World Driver Championships amongst the many achievements.

All this from humble beginnings when Paul Morgan and Mario Illien decided the time was right to leave Cosworth and set up their own engineering company. Plans were drawn up at Paul's house in Brixworth to design and build an Indy V8 and in 1984 the company was formed. The company name was chosen as an amalgam of, in alphabetical order, ILlien and MORgan.

Paul and Mario had convinced the team owner and industrial magnate Roger Penske to back the project and whilst Penske provided the initial captial he recognised early on that they would need a major motor company as a partner. Penske soon established a sponsorship link between Ilmor Engineering and General Motors (GM) to badge the new Indy engine as a Chevrolet.

Chevrolet went on to have an incredibly successful association with Ilmor in Indycar racing between 1987 and 1993, taking 86 race wins including six Indy 500 wins and five Driver Championships.

Since that time Ilmor has gone from strength to strength, growing rapidly and having hugely successful relationships with high profile partners Mercedes-Benz (Formula 1 & Indycar) and Honda (Indycar).

Today the company is able to draw on 25 years of racing expertise to deliver exceptional engineering solutions to its clients. The main business remains the design, development and production of racing engines and components. Ilmor is a consultant for motorsport clients from all forms of racing, but the company is also using its racing know-how to diversify into other areas such as OEM automotive, defence, marine and energy efficient engine applications.

We thank our many partners, clients, suppliers and employees who have made the last 25 years so successful and enjoyable.
