Following on from the success of their appearance at the 2008 PMW show Ilmor recently exhibited at the 2009 Engine Expo in Stuttgart. The Engine Expo is the most important international trade show in Europe for engine technology and proved an ideal venue for Ilmor to showcase its skills and latest engine concepts.
The main attraction on the Ilmor stand proved to be the cutaway version of the Ilmor 5-stroke concept engine. Invented by Gerhard Schmitz, with Ilmor providing the design, manufacture and development expertise, the 5 stroke is a gasoline engine with fuel consumption and emission levels comparable to that of current Diesel engines, without the serious problem of particulate and NOx emissions that plague Diesels. The cutaway engine allowed visitors to see, understand and interact with the ingenious inner workings of this highly fuel-efficient engine.
Not forgetting its racing heritage Ilmor also showed its MotoGP engine and bike as well as the hugely successful Honda IndyCar engine, 6 time winner of the Indy 500, produced as a technical partnership between Honda Performance Development (HPD) and Ilmor.
Visitors to the stand were also able to discover how clients can benefit from the services offered by Ilmor, from the design and development of individual components through to whole engines, as well as the highly accurate engine test facilities which can be hired for durability, performance and emissions testing.
