The various racing and production based programmes in which Ilmor has participated over the years have given our development engineers first-hand experience of running and optimising engines using many different types of fuel.
The IndyCar series, for example, has seen significant changes in the fuels used over the last few years. Until a few years ago IndyCar engines ran on Methanol, but in an effort to improve the 'green' credentials of the sport this has recently been replaced with a renewable sugarcane-based Ethanol. This has been introduced to the sport in two stages; E10 in 2006 and then E98 in 2007, both of which Ilmor have thoroughly tested and made the necessary engine strategy and design adjustments to ensure that the engines deliver optimum power whilst maintaining the required durability.
By virtue of our non-racing client engine development programmes Ilmor also has experience with Diesel and Aviation fuel and as such we understand the demands of each. Our five 9000 litre underground fuel tanks can be loaded with any type of fuel to allow virtually any engine to be tested. If a client wishes to provide their own fuel we are also able to run it directly from the barrel, to allow back-to-back fuel tests to be carried out for instance.

A new age of renewable fuels
Environmental pressures mean that it is more important than ever to develop and refine methods to harness the power of renewable 'green' fuels. Ilmor is keen to be a part of this exciting new technology and we are actively involved in development programmes with the following fuels;
